A ghostly pirate ship glows pale green in a fog bank under a full moon, its sails torn to ribbons and a lantern burning at its stern. A jack-o'-lantern floats in the water before it, and wisps of fog curl around the hull.
October at sea · ghost ship season

The dead sail on Fridays too.

Pirates have always been the spookiest people on the ocean. They flew skulls. They buried cursed gold. They told ghost stories in the dark below deck while the timbers creaked overhead. Halloween did not give pirates their skulls. Pirates lent Halloween theirs.
Tales from below deck

The spookiest stories at sea

Legend

The Flying Dutchman

A ship doomed to sail forever and never make port, seen glowing on the horizon in stormy weather. Sailors have been telling this one for more than two hundred years, and it has never once gotten less good.

Legend

Davy Jones' locker

The bottom of the sea, where drowned sailors and sunken ships go. Who Davy Jones was, nobody can say. Where his locker is, everybody knows: straight down.

Real, and still spooky

St. Elmo's fire

A blue-white glow that crackles at the tops of masts in a thunderstorm. It is a weather phenomenon, and it is completely harmless to see, and imagine seeing it at midnight in 1715 anyway.

Tradition

Cursed treasure

Every good pirate story has gold that should not have been taken. Every good pirate takes it anyway. That is called a plot.

The only costume you need

A pirate is every Halloween costume at once

A pirate costume is already the best Halloween costume. Add a little spook and it becomes every Halloween costume. Here is the full range, from “a bit ghostly” to “has been at the bottom of the sea for three hundred years and is fine about it.”

Mild

The pirate

Hat, coat, boots. No modifications. Already spooky, because there is a skull on your flag.

Medium

The ghost pirate

The pirate, but pale, a bit see-through and very dramatic about the sea. Rattle a chain if you have one.

Hot

The skeleton crew

All bones, still wearing the hat. Treat the fact that you are a skeleton as a minor inconvenience that does not stop you doing a shanty.

Extra hot

The sea itself

Come as Davy Jones' locker. We do not know what this looks like. We would love to find out.

Spotted on the horizon

The ghost ship

The Friday before Halloween is still a Friday, and Friday is when the crew sails. If a pale ship comes out of the fog with fifty pirates on its deck, some of them noticeably deceased, that is just us. Wave. We will wave back, possibly with a bone.

A carved jack-o'-lantern wearing a tricorn hat and an eyepatch, glowing orange from inside, sitting on a coil of rope beside a pile of gold coins.
The ship's pumpkin. Promoted to first mate every October.
